The Figure 8 knot is made in the end of a rope.
It is bulkier than an Overhand knot.

Step #1
Make a loop.

Step #2
Bring the end around behind the standing part.

Step #3
Put the end through the loop.

Finished Figure 8
Dress and set the knot.
