Gosling's Family Reserve Old Rum is a legend among rums.
Classic, rare, and perhaps even worth an expedition
For starters, it would be hard for the presentation to be any more
impressive. The rum comes in a champagne bottle made of dark green frosted glass,
individually hand numbered, with a simple label encircled with a
metal band, cork-topped and dipped in thick black wax - the black
Gosling's black seal is infinitely more attainable in both price and
availability, as well as a standard favorite of mine for
mixed drinks, but Family Reserve takes the same robust blend to
an entirely new level. Sturdy, leggy, and deep, dark brown -
few rums present with such immediate authority.
The bouqeut is
rich with semi-sweet caramel, vanilla, oak, and a soft hint of prunes and
dried stone fruits. The flavor has wide ranges and complex with
traits of caramel,
molasses, and smoke; followed interchangeably by baked apples,
roasted nuts, vanilla, tobacco, wood, cherries, spice.
It's a journey of forgotten craftsmanship in a glass.
A velvety yet deceiving smoothness
wraps around your tongue and still finds a way to softly kick on
its way down - as a proper rum should.
Mixing this rum with
anything whatsoever would be a crime. Even ice should be
avoided as enjoying it warm in a snifter is the only way to
appreciate this wonderfully nuanced experience. If you
ever get the chance to pick up a bottle of this rare treasure,
don't let it pass you by.
